How do split pots and kickers work?

Split pots happen when two players hold hands of equal value. For example, if the board shows 7788K and two players hold a 7 as one of their pocket cards, they both have hands that consist of a full house, 7s over 8s and the pot would need to be divided equally between them.

Kickers are the cards that do not take part in the determining rank of the hand but are used to break a tie between two equally ranking hands. For example, if two players both have a pair of kings and the remaining 3 cards in each hand were A97 and Q64 then the first player would use the A as the 'kicker' to win the hand.
